Acne During Pregnancy
Acne is very common during pregnancy. In some individuals, especially those who did not experience acne previously, pregnancy acne may be clinically mild. However, for many individuals, the acne may be severe.
The primary cause of acne when you're pregnant is the increased androgenic hormone levels. This higher level of hormones stimulates oil glands to express excessively, leading to oily greasy skin, blocked pores, inflammation, dark spots, and beyond. Not every pregnant patient will have acne, however you have a higher risk if you have a history of acne or have acne flares relating to your menstrual cycle.
Many prescription and over-the-counter treatments can be harmful to the baby and avoidance is recommended; managing acne when you're pregnant can be very challenging.
Pregnancy is challenging in itself, the hormone changes that affect the skin also affect the mood, the nerves, the sensitive feelings…the weight gain, body changes… all of this can be quite trialing.

Melasma that occurs during or relating to pregnancy is also known as the mask of pregnancy. It can occur any time during pregnancy and sometimes after delivery. This condition is usually, like pregnancy acne, linked to excessive hormone production. For some patients this condition resolves, with little to no interventions, after delivery. For others, once triggered, melasma can become a lifelong struggle.
